No one would have guessed that we would
experience the worst and the best in the same year. The worst hit
right out of the gates...no one could buy a contact. We could hear
loud signals but they simply couldn't hear us. To top that off, we had
too many transmitters going and too many speakers blaring. No one could
clearly hear the signals coming from his own speaker so guess what one
does...yep...crank up the volume....time four. Frustration unlimited!
This occurred despite having our antennas mighty close to the heavens!!
Well supper came and our fortunes began to change (despite the
rain). The food was outstanding!! Charlie cooked the hamburgers and
brats and the ladies brought lots of extra dishes and they were
excellent. Supper was blessed with a little rain but fortunately we
had room inside and under the tree (which lightning fortunately didn't
hit). There's nothing like great food to lift your spirits.
After supper, several people had places to go and the wives headed
for home. With several gone, we went back to operating and it must have
been around 8:30 or 9, the magic began. We had a long run on 20cw, 15
fone improved, and we got a good start on 40....FINALLY! Once the
gates opened, things really started flowing then the night shift showed
up (well part of it) and took over. Believe it or not, 15 meters stayed
open until after 1AM (unheard of...but great!!!!). 40 was good, and 20
continued into the night. Eventually the pro from Dover (NØJL) came and the
full night shift was in motion. To make a long story a little
shorter...the final tally was just shy of 1300....1294 or 1296
contacts.
When it ended, everyone felt exhilaration and seemed
sufficiently exhausted!! A big thanks to all who brought computers, to
Neal and Charlie for successfully getting the linking system, to
everyone who made very short work of the clean up, and especially the
ladies for the delicious meal. I don't want to forget Neal who provided
soft drinks and logging service. Also to Mike Potts who should have
sufficient motivation to get his general, and to Dale for not only
getting the hamburger but supplying the vertical, working 15 meters, and
for getting all that antenna junque out of my yard!! hi Special thanks
to Terry for keeping one member from killing another!! hi hi hi There's
a lot more thanks to around but you're tired of reading of it by now and
they know who I'm talking about. It involved nearly everybody in the
club and I'd like to congratulate all for really hanging in there when
the going was tough only to be blessed with a rip roaring ending. You
all sleep well tonight...eh?? 73 Steve

de WAØITP: FD2006 is now history, and what a great time it was. Only Puerto Rico escaped the log book, nearly a clean sweep! Below is the
Summary page that the N3FJP logging program generates.
The wireless network and N3FJP FD logging
software performed very well and allowed us all some peace of mind. We had
Steve's KWD 2000 on cw and His FT-100DX and Bill's TS-140 on fone..KE0BX
contributed a PSK station.
We learned a lot this year and we may look at some slight changes for next
year, like spreading out the stations and antennas somewhat to eliminate
some of the interference to our own stations. CW was heard on the fone rigs
and vice versa. We'll also isolate the laptops from the Coca-Cola.
This years stats:
We had 1294 total contacts, just bettering last years total of 1220. The cw
station slightly outgunning the fone stations, 657 to 637..and we claikmed a
total score of 3902. I have already emailed out results to the ARRL. We had
10 participants (maybe 11). It was great fun, cant wait until next year....
The next club event is the 2M Fox Hunt on July 8th and I be da Fox...I'd
like to kick it off at 1:00 PM if that's ok. Wanna eat somewhere first?
